believing in barcelona

Last month I was welcomed with open arms to the vibrant and captivating city of Barcelona, where sun-kissed beaches, mesmerizing architecture, and a zest for life converge to create an unforgettable adventure. I was all-too-ready to embark on my much needed journey and it certainly did not disappoint! Every moment was pure magic in itself, indulging my senses, tantalizing my taste buds, and leaving me with a treasure trove of beautiful memories.

Barcelona is a place where history, culture, and modernity intertwine to create a captivating tapestry that will enchant your senses Nestled along the northeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, this Mediterranean gem beckons you to explore its vibrant streets and bask in the warmth of its culture. The city’s history dates back over 2,000 years, and you can feel its richness in every nook and cranny. It is definitely a playground for architects and enthusiasts. The extraordinary creations of Antoni Gaudi, including the iconic Sagrada Familia and the whimsical Park Güell, are just the beginning!

The interior of the Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia is one of the most iconic and breathtaking landmarks in Barcelona, Spain. This magnificent basilica is a true statement to the genius of architect Antoni Gaudi and has become an enduring symbol of Barcelona’s rich architectural heritage. It is renowned for its unique architectural style, which blends elements of Gothic and Art Nouveau design. Gaudi embarked on this ambitious project way back in 1882 and dedicated much of his life to its construction, and it remains unfinished to this day, making it one of the most famous construction projects in the world.

Visiting the Sagrada Familia is an awe-inspiring experience, whether you’re an architecture enthusiast, an art lover, or simply a curious traveller. The basilica stands as a testament to human creativity and dedication, and it continues to inspire and captivate all who lay eyes on it. It’s a must-visit landmark in Barcelona and an architectural wonder that leaves a lasting impression. Barcelona is also renowned for its diverse and captivating urban architecture, which reflects a rich history of artistic and architectural movements. The city is a true open-air museum, showcasing a wide range of architectural styles and influences. But enough on my favorite topic, there’s oh so much more to see & do!

Barceloneta in full summer swing

One of my favorite spots is the Barceloneta neighborhood, which boasts a unique blend of traditional fishermen’s cottages and contemporary structures. The Port Vell area showcases a blend of maritime and modern architectural elements, with notable structures like the Maremagnum shopping and entertainment complex. The Port of Barcelona is a major maritime hub, one of the most busiest and most significant ports in the Mediterranean, serving as a vital gateway for trade, tourism, and logistics. The port area has undergone substantial urban development over the years, making the waterfront promenade a particularly vibrant area with restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues.

We had a particularly late dinner one night at the exclusive Carballeira, a highly regarded Galician restaurant in this particular area. Galicia is a region in the northwest of Spain known for its rich culinary traditions, particularly its seafood and Galician-style cuisine. The restaurant is often praised for its fresh seafood, including its pulpo a la gallega and various preparations of fish. Its warm and welcoming atmosphere with a cozy and rustic decor complements the authentic Galician dining experience. A top recommendation!

Even though we were only in Barcelona for a short time, we had the opportunity to take a short trip to the nearby town of Girona. Located in the northeastern part of Catalonia, Spain, it is situated on the banks of the Onyar River and has a rich history that dates back to Roman times. The city is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, narrow winding streets, and a historic Jewish quarter, which gained international recognition as one of the filming locations for our beloved series “Game of Thrones.” One of the most memorable sequences filmed in Girona was the depiction of the city of Braavos; the Cathedral of Girona also played a significant role, used as the exterior of the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing.

Although the city’s picturesque and historic charm itself attracts plenty of tourists, we were there for a quite unique experience. Life works in curious ways most of the time, and it just so happens that we knew the right people in the right places at the right time, and we were granted access to the presidential box at the Estadi Montilivi, where we rooted for the Girona FC in a defining match against none other than Real Madrid. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!

Once back in la bella Barna (an official nickname for the city of Barcelona), it was time to get busy! Our first night back, we had tickets to the opera. The Gran Teatre del Liceu, often simply referred to as the Liceu, is an iconic opera house located in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. And we had tickets to see none other than “Eugene Onegin”, a novel in verse written by the Russian author Alexander Pushkin. It was completed in 1831 and is considered one of the greatest works of Russian literature.

Whether you are an opera enthusiast, a lover of classical music, or someone interested in Barcelona’s cultural heritage, a visit to the Gran Teatre del Liceu provides a unique and enriching experience. Located on La Rambla, one of Barcelona’s most famous boulevards, the Liceu is easily accessible and holds a central place in the city’s cultural landscape. We were sadly lured into having our late dinner along the famous Rambla, where prices soar sky high for really bad quality food!

Adventure awaited us the next day at the very impressive Moco Museum. The Moco Museum (Modern Contemporary Museum), which in Spanish translates rather hilariously, is an independent museum located in Amsterdam and Barcelona, dedicated to exhibiting modern & contemporary art. The museum was founded with the mission of attracting broader and younger audiences, and making art accessible to the public.

In their collection, Moco exhibits Jean-Michel Basquiat, Banksy, Icy & Sot, JR, KAWS, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Yayoi Kusama, THE KID, Andy Warhol, Studio Irma, and so many more! Visitors are offered an unparalleled collection of art to reflect on modern society. Celebrating contemporary masters as the voices of tomorrow, their art engages our inner activists, activates our experience, and empowers us to lead with love. The way it should be!

One of KAWS’s most iconic creations is his “Companion” series, welcoming you as you arrive!

KAWS, Banksy, and Yayoi Kusama are at the top of my list, but Studio Irma‘s Diamond Matrix absolutely stole my heart! The contemporary Dutch artist Studio Irma creates digital immersive art exhibitions, spaces, artworks and experiences. With a devoted multi-disciplinary team, they combine augmented reality, videomapping, sculpture, computer animation, painting, and digital techniques to imagine the unforgettable. And she couldn’t put it any better:

“As humans we undergo great pressures. Yet socially, failing is not accepted. Diamonds, made of carbon, go through incredible stress, to emerge as shining jewels and one of the strongest materials on earth. so can you. This installation of hundreds of light-up diamonds expresses that we participate in a bigger picture, sharing more similarities than differences.”

“Life is messy and hard, but it makes us stronger. Who are the diamonds in your life?”

Post art-indulgence we walked around El Born, the Moco Museum´s neighborhood. It is part of the larger Ciutat Vella district and is known for its historical and cultural significance. El Born is rich in history and played a crucial role in medieval Barcelona. The neighborhood is home to various historic buildings and sites. The Passeig del Born is a lively pedestrian street is at the heart of the neighborhood and is surrounded by cafes, bars, and shops. It is a popular spot for both locals and tourists to stroll and enjoy the atmosphere. The perfect spot for a break: Bar El Born.

Not your typical afternoon coffee!

El Born offers a vibrant nightlife with numerous bars and clubs, particularly around Passeig del Born. The area is also known for its diverse culinary scene, ranging from traditional Catalan cuisine to trendy eateries. El Born is often appreciated for its unique blend of history, culture, and contemporary vibes, making it a popular destination for both locals and visitors exploring Barcelona. Our last night in Barcelona was definitely a night to remember!

Salut a l’amor!

On a final note on Barcelona, one cannot overlook the warmth of its people—the Catalans whose pride in their heritage is matched only by their welcoming spirit. Barcelona is more than a destination; it’s an immersion into a world where past and present coexist, where creativity knows no bounds, and where every street corner invites you to discover the magic of this remarkable city. It continues to be a dynamic and captivating destination that leaves a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to wander its streets and savor its unique spirit.

Barcelona is not just a city; it’s an experience that engages the senses. The tantalizing aromas of Catalan cuisine, the rhythm of flamenco echoing through narrow alleys, and the cheers of football fans at Camp Nou all contribute to the symphony of life in this Mediterranean metropolis. As the sun sets over Tibidabo or the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona’s skyline transforms into a canvas of colors. The city’s nightlife comes alive in its bars, clubs, and beachfront gatherings, offering a dynamic and unforgettable social scene. Unforgettable it was! Salut a l’amor!
